About Spain & Barcelona

Spain is a country located in extreme southwestern Europe. It occupies about 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with its smaller neighbor Portugal. Spanish territory includes two large archipelagos, the Balearic Island sin the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands off the African Atlantic coast, two cities, Ceuta and Melilla, on the African mainland and several small islands in the Alboran Sea near the African coast.  With an area of 505,990 km2 Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe, the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union. Spain’s capital and largest city is Madrid; other major urban areas include Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga and Bilbao. It is interesting to know that Mainland Spain is a mountainous country, dominated by high plateaus and mountain chains. Around 40 million people are living in Spain. Native Spaniards make up 88% of the total population of Spain, Spanish and Catalan are the main languages with Euro being the currency.

According to the Democracy Index of the EIU, Spain is one of the 19 full democracies in the world. In 2017 Spain was the second most visited country in the world, recording 82 million tourists a record breaking number indeed.

Barcelona is located in the North Eastern Mediterranean coast of mainland Spain, about 2 hours drive South from the French Pyrenees. It is a city of marvels with around 1.6 million population. It’s the capital of Catalunya, a region of Northern Spain that has its own unique culture, traditions and personality. Many world recognized painters and artists have lived in this vibrant city and their influence is visible all throughout the city. Two of which are Picasso and Miró who have museums dedicated to some of their more important works. Barcelona truly has everything to offer to visitors, with an old history and unique architecture, this city is full of charm not to forget beautiful beaches in La Costa Brava. The variety of artistic treasures, the Romanesque churches and the great names in modern art and architecture such as Dali and Gaudi. Being located in between the sea and mountains, the city is famous for being cosmopolitan, modern and lively.

Walk along the Ramblas to enjoy street musicians and living statues. Enjoy TramviaBlau for a tram trip up to the top of Tibidabo and take in the magnificent sights of the city. Shop along the Passeig de Gracia, at the most popular boutiques in Barcelona.Have a sunset drink at a chiringuito bar on the Barceloneta beach, don’t forget the BarriGotic for a huge selection of tapas bars, wine bars and wide selection of lounges. Not to mention the fabulous paellas. And of course there is the El Born where you’ll find the finest in new Catalonian cuisine.

It is rather easy to find inexpensive flights to Barcelona from all bigger European cities and most capitals worldwide. Not to mention that Barcelona’s airport is the second largest in Spain. This city is ranked after Madrid as the country’s main source of economy. It is also home to one of the most major Mediterranean ports. Barcelona was known for its manufacturing industry, some of the most important industries being textiles, chemistry, motor and electronics. As for the service market, the leaders are logistics, publishing, and telecommunications.

Spain in general is a MICE industry favorite, ranked number 3 in the world for meetings and conferences by the ICCA. Due to the diverse availability of venues (more than 50 conference centers) and hotels Barcelona is considered as one of the top five cities for MICE events.
